Biography/History

Records of a church constructed in 1881, the first church in Rusk County, Wisconsin.

Located along the Chippewa River, the parish first served a congregation of French-Canadian settlers and Chippewa Indians. At its centennial in 1981, it still served a small congregation and was administered as a mission of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bruce, Wisconsin.

Scope and Content Note

The records consist of a sacramental record book, 1866-1908, in French noting baptisms, first communions, confirmation, and marriages; financial records, 1880- 1968; and miscellaneous papers, 1879-1981. Included in the miscellaneous papers are a mimeographed history of the community, an 1879 subscription list for building the church, an 1884 petition from Flambeau citizens seeking to eliminate saloons from the community, clippings and memorabilia from the 1981 church centennial, and other items.
